When people fail, they usually find something or someone else to blame. The usual victims are the economy, the current administration (whichever one it may be), or their parents. Some move forward and blame themselves, but conclude that they're just not good enough.

That second response isn't more honest than the first. It's the same ego, just facing inward instead of outward. Blaming the economy protects the self-image by keeping the fault outside. Concluding "I'm just not good enough" protects it too, in a stranger way, by turning a fixable problem into a fixed identity. If you were never good enough to begin with, you're off the hook for having to try differently. Both responses do the same job: they let a person avoid looking directly at what actually happened.

Truth is, the biggest hindrance to growth and to success is ego. It's very subtle, but its effects are far from subtle.

Some of the manifestations of ego are shyness, overconfidence, unhealthy competition, and envy. There are more, but that might be too much for one article.

Shyness

When ego inflates, it doesn't just make people feel important but also makes their self-image fragile. The bigger the image a person holds of themselves, the more they feel there is to lose if reality contradicts it. This makes them avoid any activity that risks puncturing that image. This is the root of "what if I mess it up? They'll all laugh at me." The thought of being laughed at is enough to make them fold before anyone has laughed at all.

Take the business owner who never promotes their product. They've built a story in their head where putting themselves forward and being ignored would be unbearable. So they say nothing, they post nothing, they pitch to no one, and they call it humility, or ‘not being ready’, when really, it's ego protecting itself by never showing up. Why should a stranger care about your offer if they don't yet see value in it? That's not rejection; it's just how attention works. But to an ego that needs every audience to be impressed, ordinary indifference feels like a verdict.

A fix for this isn't to stop caring what people think but to let the indifference happen a few hundred times and notice that you actually survived it, and grew, no matter by how little the percentage.

Overconfidence

Where shyness is ego protecting itself by never showing up, overconfidence is ego protecting itself by refusing to check its own assumptions. It's the same fragile self-image, just facing the opposite direction. Instead of fearing the verdict, it's already decided the verdict in its own favor, and stopped listening for anything that might contradict it.

Take the wannabe influencer convinced they're the most beautiful, most talented, most magnetic person in any room. Ego doesn't ask for evidence. It just asks for agreement, and finds it easy enough to manufacture in their own head. So they post, expecting the numbers to simply confirm what they already know.

When the views don't come, and when the likes trickle in instead of flood, the gap between self-image and reality doesn't read as useful information, but reads as the world being wrong. ‘Was the lighting off? Was the algorithm against me? My content is probably too superior for these people that are used to brain rot.’ Anything except the most obvious answer: maybe the audience was never as captivated as I assumed, and maybe, just maybe, they desire actual value.

Overconfidence refuses to let reality update it. A person who genuinely believes they can't fail has no reason to ask what failure would teach them, right up until failure stops being a hypothetical. A way out is to treat the numbers as a teacher instead of a referee with bad judgment.

Unhealthy Competition

Ego doesn't just want to succeed, it wants to be seen succeeding, and specifically, succeeding more than the person next to it. The shift, from "how do I get better" to "how do I look better than them," is where decisions start getting messy.

Take for example, two young founders who launch around the same time. One spends the first year doing unglamorous things. Fixing churn, talking to customers, watching the runway, etc. The other moves fast and loud: a flashy launch event, a hire done too early, a press mention they can drop into conversations. Every decision is made with one eye on what their peers will think when they hear about it. Within a year, the second founder has the better story, with more followers, a bigger valuation, and a name people recognize. The first founder has the better business: real revenue, real retention, real customers, and money in the bank.

The second founder didn't fail at building a company as they never really tried to. They built a highlight reel, and it worked exactly as designed, right up until the highlight reel needed to pay its own bills.

Unhealthy competition replaces "what does my business need right now" with "what will make me look better than them right now." And those two questions rarely have the same answer. Asking the first question on purpose, every time, makes the second one to stop getting a vote.

Envy

“Why should he get it, and not me?" Ego usually measures its own worth by comparison, so when someone else wins, it doesn't register as their win. It registers as a referendum on you; proof you're falling behind, proof you're not enough. And ego, fragile as it is, can't sit with that conclusion for long. It needs to do something with the discomfort, and it usually goes one of two ways.

The first is denigration. A colleague gets the promotion, and instead of asking what they did to earn it, the passed-over employee starts looking for reasons it shouldn't count, they only got it because they're close to the boss, because the timing favored them, because the bar was lowered. Every reason points outward, to luck or politics or circumstance, because the one explanation that's off the table is the simplest one: the colleague played their cards better. Admitting that would mean admitting a gap exists, and ego would rather invent a conspiracy than sit with a gap. So the real work, figuring out what the colleague actually did, and doing it next time, never happens, because doing it would first require admitting it was necessary.

The second is subtler, and perhaps more costly: self-pity that curdles into giving up. A founder watches a peer's startup get funded and, instead of asking what that founder is doing differently, concludes it's simply not their turn, and maybe never will be. The energy that could've gone into fixing the pitch, the product, or the network, goes instead into a private case for why trying further is pointless. Nothing gets denigrated here, but nothing gets attempted either.

Both responses skip the same step: actually looking at what the other person did right. The one step, looking instead of explaining away, is the whole cure.

The Common Thread

Shyness, overconfidence, unhealthy competition, envy, four different behaviors, but one root. Each happens when self-image gets too fragile to survive contact with reality, and ego scrambles to protect it rather than let it be tested.

Sometimes that means never showing up, so the verdict never gets a chance to arrive. Sometimes it means deciding the verdict in advance, so reality has to be wrong if it disagrees. Sometimes it means chasing the appearance of winning instead of the substance of it, because appearance is easier to control. And sometimes it means explaining away someone else's win, because admitting they earned it would mean admitting you have work left to do.

None of these protect anyone from failure. They only protect the story a person tells about themselves while failing, at the cost of ever finding out what they were actually capable of.

Growth asks for the opposite of all this: a self-image sturdy enough to take a hit and stay standing. A growing person is not necessarily without ego, but has an ego quiet enough to let the evidence in.

Practically, that doesn't look glamorous. It's the embarrassing post that was posted anyway, the number you actually checked instead of explaining away, and the question "what did they do that I didn't" asked before any other question. None of it feels like growth while you're doing it. It just is.

That's the whole difference between the person who stalls out and the person who keeps building, long after the embarrassment, the loss, and the comparison would have stopped someone else cold.
